Since 2007, Thibault Chatillon has been working with, inventing, flying and designing drones, including designing passenger electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Chatillon is based in Lyon, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, France. In addition, he’s designed the first vertiport network in France for eVTOL aircraft and drones. Chatillon is also working on innovative eVTOL aircraft design concepts for advanced aerial mobility (AAM) and air racing. On several of Chatillon’s social media accounts, his handle is Tibo Cat Lion.

The Le Colibri is a three passenger long range hybrid-electric VTOL concept design aircraft that has one main high wing with winglets and a horizontal stabilizer. The aircraft can be piloted or flown autonomously. The propellers are stacked and are located inside the wings and tail which will rotate in all directions to have complete directional control of the aircraft. The Le Colibri has a cruise speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) and has a range of 300 km (186 miles). Le Colibri translates to English as The Hummingbird.

The aircraft is expected to be used for advanced air mobility within a city and between cities. The aircraft is foreseen to be used for many civilian and government advanced air mobility missions including air cargo service.

Specifications:

  • Aircraft type: Hybrid-electric VTOL passenger concept aircraft
  • Piloting: Piloted or autonomous
  • Capacity: 3 persons or air cargo
  • Cruise speed: 250 km/h (155 mph)
  • Range: 300 km (186 miles)
  • Cruise altitude: According to the rules of each country
  • Propellers: 6 propellers
  • Electric motors: 6 electric motors
  • Power source: Hybrid-electric
  • Fuselage: Carbon fiber composite
  • Windows: Large windows allowing forward, left, right visibility with a solid roof above the passenger compartment
  • Wings: 1 main high wing with winglets
  • Tail: 1 horizontal stabilizer
  • Landing gear: Retractable tricycle wheeled landing gear
  • Safety features: Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP), provides safety through redundancy for its passengers and/or cargo. DEP means having multiple propellers (or ducted fans) and motors on the aircraft so if one or more propellers (ducted fans) or motors fail, the other working propellers (or ducted fans) and motors can safely land the aircraft. There are also redundancies of critical components in the sub-systems of the aircraft.
